UNILA Communication Studies Department Hosted a Public Lecture Taught by an Outstanding Professor from Canada

Bandar Lampung – The widespread use of social media has led to the emergence of various new arrangements and behaviour patterns of its users.

To provide a deeper understanding of the matter, the Department of Communication Studies under Lampung University held a public lecture with the theme “Emoticon Servants 2.0: Algorithmic Life and Our Future.” The class was led by Prof Meriyna Lim Ph.D. who spoke about the results of her research.

The professor, who is a Canada Research Chair in Digital Media and Global Network Society in The School of Journalism and Communication Carleton University, Canada, explained that our mindsets as well as our emotions are now being determined by algorithms from the usage of social media that we consume every day.

According to her, despite the optimism of technological advancement, the internet and its systems have gradually formed a habit of consuming the same information, resulting in the crystallization of likes into extreme likes, and dislikes into extreme hates. Like and dislike in a neoliberal way has become a business.

“This algorithm is influenced by the human resources, humans who are framed as passive parties are actually active parties in shaping the situation in the use of social media,” said the woman who was included in the category of 100 Most Influential Women in Indonesia when presenting the results of her research.

This activity was carried out on Wednesday, 5 October 2022 at 08.00 WIB through ZOOM Meeting and was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Dra. Ida Nurhaida, M.Si., and attended by lecturers and students of the Communication Studies Department of Lampung University.
